Cultural differences that matter
In France, where I live, Easter is a holiday. This isn't surprising.
The Monday that follows Easter, Easter Monday, is also a holiday. Many (most?) workers have the day off; banks and schools are closed.
Like Toussaint (All Saints Day), Easter Monday long puzzled me. I reasoned that the religious significance of Good Friday, before Easter, outweighed that of Easter Monday. I took the choice of holiday as another sign of the waning influence of religion in, or the growing secularism of, French life. Now I'm more inclined to view "Monday holidays" as a gesture to families and to travel schedules: having the day off Monday allows extended families to spend the day together on Easter Sunday.
